United Way Yukon Board of Directors

Greetings from the Board!

The Board of Directors strives to provide good governance and accountable use of the donations that we receive from the community. We are proud that 90% of all donations and 100% of the Workplace Campaign donations we raise go directly to Yukon charitable organizations.

It is important to us that our Board consists of a broad cross section of the community at large and that the membership is community minded, energetic and knowledgeable.

Currently, the Board has seven members. Members are elected by the general membership at the Annual General Meeting.

David Whiteside, President

United Way has been a long time passion for Dave. As a young teacher in Alberta he was a workplace canvasser. He continued that role after moving to the Yukon, as well as workplace coordinator , then Campaign Chair, and now President. Dave recommends being involved in the United Way to anyone wanting to make the Yukon a stronger, healthier community.  When he is not volunteering for us or other organizations, Dave enjoys walking, skiing, paddling, camping, and gardening. Yoga helps him to maintain some balance.

Drew Spicer, Vice President

Drew Spicer is a born and raised Yukoner. He volunteers with United Way Yukon to continue to support and build his community. Drew left the territory for several years to pursue post-secondary education in Rural and Community Development before returning in 2018. In his spare time, Drew enjoys any activity that gets him outdoors with friends and family.

Sheila Downey, Treasurer

Sheila has been dedicated to her career in bookkeeping and financial management for the past 19 years. A Yukon College alumni, her greatest satisfaction comes from utilizing her extensive experience to help struggling organizations survive and thrive. Earning her designation as a Certified Professional Bookkeeper in 2010 is proof of her commitment to her clients. Most importantly, Sheila always infuses her professional services with a giving spirit and a helping heart.

Joanne Oberg, Secretary

Joanne has lived in the Yukon for the past 40 years and during that time has been an active volunteer in the community, both in the Yukon and nationally. Joanne joined United Way Yukon as a board member in 2001. Since then, she has served as both a board member and a member of the Campaign Committee. Joanne is a proud supporter of United Way Yukon based on her shared commitment to helping many non-profit organisations and providing services to the broader community, especially families and children.

Doug Hitch, Community Engagement and Investment Committee Chair

A long-time Whitehorse resident, Doug was very involved with the indoor soccer league here for many years. He worked as Linguist at the Yukon Native Language Centre for 21 years before focusing on developing a traction device for cross-country skis (SkiClaws.com). He has lived and worked in Yellowknife, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, USA and Hungary. Doug continues to do academic research on the linguistics and history of Inner Asia as well as northwestern Canada and maintains a publications list on ResearchGate. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Doug_Hitch

Eric Leonard

Eric has volunteered with a variety of organizations in the past and enjoys being able to support the community through working with United Way Yukon. Although relatively new to the Yukon, he appreciates the sense of community that is present and lively in the territory. In his spare time he enjoys all manner of outdoor activities, and especially loves running and soccer. He likes anything to do with coffee, and reading obscure nonfiction books such as one on the history of paper.

Cameron Ouellette

Cameron Ouellette was born in the Yukon but has lived most of his life in Alberta. He recently moved back “home” and has joined United Way Yukon to make a positive contribution to our community. Cameron’s work in renewable energy gives him the opportunity to learn about new cultures and people, which he greatly enjoys. When not working, Cameron is an avid runner and reader.
